Winter and Truth
Spring is the season of love.
Summer is the season of youth.
Fall is the season of harvest and plenty
But winter is the season of truth.
Their realities harsh,
Their stares cold,
Both winter and truth
Are stark and bold.
Cruel and uncaring,
Revealing and unrelenting,
Winter and truth
Lay bare the nature of everything.
In the spring, the squirrel
Is merely a silly rodent.
But winter shows the squirrel
Forward-thinking and prudent.
He gathers his acorns before winter sets in
And buries them all around.
When he can no longer eat from the tree,
The squirrel then eats from the ground.
In the summer, the bear
Is a great and powerful beast.
But winter shows the bear
Can’t be troubled in the least.
Content to sleep during trying times
Cold and hunger he must stave.
Until the tree can provide food and cover,
The bear hibernates in a cave.
In the fall, the bird
Gracefully soars and sings a song.
But winter shows the bird
Won’t stick around for long.
Heading south for warmer climes,
A feathered, fair-weather friend,
The bird will not think to return
Until the tree has foliage to nest in.
When winter arrives and, through its trials,
Reveals the truth about me,
You will learn that I am not the squirrel, the bear, or the bird.
I am the tree.
